VSCO’s new Histogram tool is only available for Pro Members on the iOS platform.
What is a histogram?
The histogram is a graph that shows the distribution of light in an image. It’s a very reliable tool to help you better understand the tones and exposure in a particular photo are measured graphically in terms of red, green, and blue channels that combine to form a color image and its luminance values.
The VSCO Histogram tool has 2 modes that you can tap to switch between:
- RGB
- Luminance
RGB Histogram
An RGB histogram measures the red, green, and blue colors within a photo and the color of the photo. There will be 3 histograms stacked on top of each other. Each one represents a different color, giving you insights and measurements for each color channel.
Luminance Histogram
A luminance histogram shows the average brightness of an entire image. It maps the brightness of every pixel in an image from absolute black (0% brightness) on the left side of the graph to pure white (100% brightness).
What we want to emphasize is that the Histogram tool is not a measurement to identify whether your photo edits are correct or not. It’s simply a useful measurement tool to help you better understand your image, editing preferences, and style.
How to access the Histogram tool

- Tap on the histogram graph to view the RGB histogram.
- Tap on the graph again to switch and view the Luminance histogram.
- As you're making edits to your image, you’ll see the RGB or Luminance graphs change to reflect the updated tones and exposure in your image.
