Histogram tips and tricks.
As you begin (or continue) your growth as an editor with a histogram, here are some suggestions to help you master this tool:
Open a few images you’ve already edited and look at their histogram.
Are they dark? Light? Where do the highlights and shadows land? Start to get to know your own preferences and what they look like on the histogram.
Try downloading the images of photographers you love and see what their histograms look like. Is there anything consistent you see?
Do the shadows tend to have more blue? Do the highlights tend to be darker? Or less blue? How does this compare to your own editing?
With the histogram view up, edit your image and watch how the various presets and tools change the values.
Perhaps you’ve always liked C1 but never understood why — now you can! As you learn what you like and what tools and presets do through the histogram, you’ll be able to spend less time guessing and edit with more confidence and speed.
Remember - there is no wrong histogram!
It’s just a gauge, so let your eyes be the final say in what’s right for what you create.
