Artists use cameras not only to look at their surroundings, but at themselves as well. Self-portraiture blurs the line between photographer and subject. By playing both of these roles at once, you can begin to understand how each perspective contributes to a single image. Get creative with your own approach with these simple tips to help you rethink your next selfie.
Use Distance & Details.

Self-portraits do not always need to be an arm's length away. By experimenting with different distances between yourself and the lens, you'll begin to find multiple compositions. You can start to see yourself in new ways and focus on smaller details, pushing the definition of portraiture itself. Try using a ledge or surface to support your camera so you have more flexibility to explore the space.
Create a Story.

Creating visual connections and juxtapositions are ways to welcome a sense of narrative into your photos. From literally exploring a process, to more conceptually interacting with items in your everyday environment, introducing additional elements can help provide any necessary context you may want to give. How can you use your setting to enhance or challenge your definition of self?
Go Abstract.

Taking visual risks is one of the funnest ways to make creative discoveries. Obscuring images through reflections, shadows, and blur can open up a level of ambiguity, or draw attention to more specific aspects of yourself, the subject. Experiment with any manual controls and don't discount accidents – sometimes they make the best photos. Manual focus or a simple light setup can dramatically shift the feel of an image – try using these tools to reinforce concepts or feelings you may want to communicate in your selfie.
